WOOL is sustainable, renewable, and biodegradable. It is the only carpet fiber that is. When it comes to regeneration, sheep are unequivocally the best source for carpet fiber. Sheep live long and productive lives producing wool as long as they live. Only a fraction of the amount of energy is used to produce wool compared to any other carpet fiber.

One New Zealand sheep will yield 10-30 lbs. of wool annually. The amount and type of wool is dependent upon its breed (genetics), grazing habitat, and shearing interval. Some sheep produce extremely fine apparel fibers and some very course carpet fibers used in floorcovering and tapestries.

When properly constructed, wool carpets can deliver heroic feats of performance. Who does not remember the wool carpet in our grandparents’ home? It will suffer the heaviest foot traffic and still look great. There is a saying about wool (as opposed to synthetic carpet) “it grows old gracefully”. Properly cared for wool can and does perform without significant surface changes for many years. It is naturally resilient, stain resistant, abrasion resistant, insulating, comfortable, and luxurious. It will aid the control of indoor humidity and assist in the control of static discharge.

When a wool carpet is replaced the wool from it can actually be used as fertilizer, aiding the growth of plants and decomposing naturally without using any outside energy. This is a carpet fiber that keeps its carbon footprint to an absolute minimum, while the sheep from which it was shorn have yielded repeated bales of wool.

Wool is the carpet fiber by which all other fibers are judged and no synthetic yarn will ever possess its inherent value. Though wool occupies only a small part of the floorcovering market it undeniably represents the industry’s finest qualities.
